    63 alternator stamping

I was just looking at 2 different alternators I have for my '63's and the stampings are entirely different, both in information and position.

One has the stamping in what I'd consider the conventional location (front half of case in the area behind the mounting boss for the upper support) and shows part number, date & amps. The second has the stamping on the rear half of case, off to one side on the flat area and shows date and part number ONLY, NO amps.

Are both of these accepted as correct in judging?

    Re: 63 alternator stamping

Look at the back of the alternators, are they different? A 63 Corvette alternator does not have a round hole to hold the wiring harness. All of the holes are rectangular.

Also, one could be a rebuild from multiple sources!!

      It's a well known/documented fact....

that the early Delcotrons were stamped on the REAR half of the case and made the transistion to ID numbers being stamped on the FRONT half of the case.

The change came about cira Christmas/New Years of the 1963 model year. Several untouched original alternators assembled during the week between Christmas and New Years actually have TWO sets of ID stamps (one on the front case and a second on the rear portion of the case).

Those who judge '63 Corvettes understand this running change and look for alternator components to be 'correct' based on their specific date codes....
