C1 Harmonic Balancer / Timing Cover Seal

My '58 harmonic balancer has the typical wear groove in it. My understanding is there are two options for using the balancer. Does anyone have a part number available for the timing cover seal that has an offset sealing surface to compensate for this? Any preferences on this method verses installng a sleeve? TIA Ted

Parts house will have both , double seal lip and sleeve, do both at the same time, why not!

      Ted -

The repair sleeve will probably be easier to find than the offset seal, and installing it takes about one minute; have used several of them, never had a leaker.

        Ted,

Be careful that your balancer will stay on the crankshaft. Old ones will not have the same "adhesion" properties as when new. You may want to have the inside of the hub "regrooved" to stick better.
Many years ago after removing/reinstalling mine to replace the seal on my 59s' 283 I had a little problem. Buzzing along the highway one Friday after work, I heard a very loud and pronounced "CLUNK", looked in my side mirror, and saw this orange thing rolling at over 60mph as it passed me on the left then spun itself into the median strip. Quite a surprising experience.

I used a front timing set from NAPA that included the balancer sleeve and seal. It was JV-919 for my 350. It's probably the same for a 283. You can look it up yourself at NAPA online. The sleeve was easy to install and it saved an otherwise good damper. I also used the offset rear main seal (JV-1627) because of slight wearing on the crankshaft. The crank was perfect otherwise so I couldn't see having it turned.
