My late '59 Crown Sapphire/Turquoise car has a body color trunk so also consistent with your finding! Inside was very rough and definately not sanded...

    greetings,

Re: What's wrong with this picture?

      Ted,
I reviewed Nolan's C1 book again, which is likely the reference I used when trying to understand the issue. Pages 254 & 255 talk about it but he doesn't specifically state that any 59's had trunk & top well painted exterior color. He does say that "perhaps there are some 59 Corvettes with their trunks painted exterior color as well". According to his research, the 58,59, & 60 painting instructions were the same, which was interior color for the decklid well and trunk. He does say that this is an area that needs more investigation, and it appears that as more cars show up with variations it will help solve the mystery.

I might imagine that the JG data was compiled from examples over time. It would be interesting to know approximately where the date breakpoint was between the changes. My car and Dan's is near the middle of production.(5504/~4500). It would be helpful to find earlier ones and discover their colors.

Re: What's wrong with this picture?

Rich, I can even add to the complexity. I have a very late '58 that has a black exterior(verses charcoal - black was approx a May '58 addition) with a "charcoal" interior (black wasn't available for the interior).

Theoretically all of the interior surfaces, top well, and trunk should be painted charcoal in this case. All of these surfaces were painted black, and all of the vinyl and steering wheel were charcoal. Hmmmmm..... We're in the process of restoring it based on how came from the factory so it will be interesting to see how this one fairs through the judging process. Ted

          '58 interior

The vinyl is charcoal and painted surfaces are black. The vinyl has the original graining and none of the interior surfaces appear to have ever been repainted.

            Re: '58 interior

Wow, Just goes to show that when in production back then, anything goes. The paint shop likely said, "Close Enough!"

Good luck with your project. Kinda like what my '62 looks like, mine needs a little "detailing" too. I was thinking of dyeing the duct tape.:-) ......yes, the Prior ripped the decklid cover off to get it open.
