Hi. I was recently told that the crack in the gusset of the differential cover on our `75 could be repaired by having it welded. Is this a practical fix, ( I would like to keep it as original as possible ), or is a heavy duty cover the only reasonable way to go? Thanks.

I'm not a metalurgist, but I simply replaced the cracked rear on my '67 and haven't looked back since. The peace of mind knowing the crack is gone and can't walk on is worth it.

It's weld-repairable by an experienced welder using special, high nickel cast iron welding rod. However, for such a circumstance as you describe, I would be hesitant to go this route. Instead, find a good, sound used cover in serviceable condition. There are a lot of good covers out there with the same casting number as the one you have; these were used for many years.In Appreciation of John HinckleyComment

Cracks don't get smaller. Like Joe said, the thing to do is replace the unit and get rid of problem completley.
