Last year I asked Santa to slip a 1965 396 in the garage on Christmas morning. You can only imagine the disappointment as I ran down the steps through open the door and saw an empty garage. I kept wishing and to my surprise Santa sent me a nice 396 in March. The previous owner gave me copies of the bill of sale, titles, and no Protecto-plate. He knew he had some paperwork but he simply couldn't find it. He had promised he would look for it but even after several months nothing turned up.
Recently I received an oversized letter from the previous owner and excitely opened the letter to find two pictures of him with the car in 1991 getting his Survivor award. I called to thank him and asked again if he had any luck finding any of the other documents he had on the car. He said that he and his wife had been all through the house, garage and basement but nothing. I wished him a happy holiday and asked him to keep his eyes open.
Last week I got a call around 10:30 p.m. and to my surprise it was the previous owner. He told me he found some documents and would send them in the mail. He also had collected nearly 20 pounds of articles and magazines over the years that he would ship after the Christmas rush. I came home Saturday afternoon and opened the mailbox only to find a small green postcard telling me that I missed the mailman and he had a pakage from the previous owner. The post office closed in 15 minutes so I drove over and collected the package just before they locked the doors.
(Here is where Santa comes back in) I opened the package and discovered that he had found-the best Christmas gift that I could have ever asked for. He had sent the original bill of sale along with another document from the dealer showing the trade in of a black 1962 for $2,716 toward my black 396 that cost $5,386. He also included the certificate and score sheet for his Suvivor award from 1991. Digging into the envelope one final time I pulled out a yellow folder from the dealer that had "important owners papers" with the owners name and address on the cover. I opened it and found the original am/fm radio instruction sheet, 396 supplement information sheet from the dealer dated Jan 65, a FM guide with listing of all the fm stations across the country, and then the jackpot- The original protecto-plate!!!! These documents are in great shape and are just the right thing to compliment the car. They verify the 396 motor, black exterior, saddle interior, 4:56 gears, trans etc. The previous owner knew he had the protecto-plate but did not want to promise me it when I purchased the car because he really did not know if he was going to be able to ever find it and did't want me to get false hope. I was screaming in the kitchen and the kids and my wife came running thinking I was having some kind of fit. I couldn't of asked for a better present. Now I just need to work on my second wish from last year (World Peace). Happy Holidays and may Santa bring you your wishes this year.
