    TQ - ATTN: #'s

Serious inquiry - I have been given today, on a potentially IMPORTANT car, information that on the "back side" of the C1 VIN tag, the numbers
"3695584" OR "3695504" appear, as scratched into the metal. My 1980 price book with #'s is no help. Anyone with a reference?

Loren -- I'm getting no hits on Parts History changes from Oct 1962 thru July 1969, and my 1980 Master Price List.

Makes me wonder if it's a Chevrolet number.

Wayne, I'm not near my reference data, and won't be until April, but I am pretty sure it's a Chevrolet Engineering part number.

        Loren------

These are Chevrolet part numbers but they are VERY old. These date back to about the 52-53 period. I can find no reference for them. It's very possible that they were PRODUCTION-only part numbers. I can tell you that if they ever were available in SERVICE, they were gone prior to 1957.

Getting information on numbers like these most likely would involve getting into Chevrolet "ancient history" archives. I doubt that numbers like these ever got into any sort of electronic database or records. More likely, IF information exists, it's going to be on microfiche or hard copy only.

Part numbers for VIN (SI) tags were "GM RESTRICTED" part numbers and would not be published in any of the service manuals or AIMs.
There is/was a GM Corporate Group that controlled the issuing of VIN/SI plates. This group also was responsible for keeping track of and doling out the vin/si plates to the plants, or if a Zone rep requested a "replacement" vin/si tag thru a Dealer, they would issue one..........only after certain procedures were met.

The drawings for "GM RESTRICTED" items were actually filed in the regular file system, HOWEVER, they were clearly marked "GM RESTRICTED" and were only available to GM people with the need to know.
