      Re: 1965 silver/silver vinyl convertibles

      Mike,

      Here's another for your registry...

I have a (originally) silver pearl/silver vinyl interior convertible (AO Smith) bodied car. I (assume) the car originally had a hardtop, since it came with the mounting ferrules and plugs on the rear deck, but lacked the top itself and the fittings for the side attachment bolts. I have since purchased a used 1965 hardtop from a firend and may retore/paint it to go with the car. Bought the car on Vancouver Island, BC in 1987. It had been owned by a young car wash jockey (!) from a Vancouver GM dealer from the late 1970s until he sold it to a helicopter pilot colleague in the Canadian Air Force in the mid-1970s. My pilot buddy sold it to his daughter's boyfriend in Jan-Feb 1987 and he in turn sold it to me when he discovered how much it was going to cost to restore, given that he knew nothing about repairing cars.

I managed to locate the ex-car wash jockey a year or so ago (he's now running a family-owned jeweller business on the Island) and he sent me a couple of photos of the car from when he had owned it--just after he purchased it from an American; the car had yellow on black California plates when he bought it, and apparently that's wher it had originated.

The car had been repainted several times in its life: light yellow, laguna blue and white (the colour when bought by the car wash jockey). The interior had been changed to black, with the original door panels apparently dyed and the seats covered with black vinyl right over top of the original (ripped) silver covers. The silver visors and silver vinyl trip strip on the deck lid remained in their original colour.

        Mike,

Also, it's a 327/300 HP 4 speed, wide-ratio with manual steering and brakes, standard steering wheel and AM/FM radio.

            Mike,
I bought the carpet from Al Knoch. When I find the VIN I will send it to you on your private email.
Good luck! I am jealous as hell.

Ours is 300 HP 4 speed, 2 tops, was poppy orange with gold flake on the rear deck in the 70s. Previous owner painted it white in the late 70s. Original door panels were dyed black which we have. Visors were not dyed but removed from car and stored in a box for years. They are back on the car with the rest of the interior black except the seat backs are mostly black, silver underneath with the black paint on top peeling off. Car would have been at Leavenworth regional but had a fuel issue.
