      Paul,

These days most real, unrestored 57's just have one key, and one key will fit all.

I don't remember the exact number but in those days there were only about a dozen or two different key codes. When a key and switch get well worn probably half of the keys out there will work the lock.

The key should open all locks, door, ignition, trunk and glove box.

          Verle:
A couple of years ago a friend locked his keys in the trunk of his '57 Corvette during the Woodward Dream Cruise. The next day we were at an A&W and another '57 came in. My friend borrowed his keys and they opened his trunk.

so if my trunk lock is a different key do you think a local lock co. could take my trunk lock and change it so other key would work

              Paul,

Any competent locksmith can change the tumblers in a lock to match your ignition/door key....no challenge at all.

It will save you money and time if you remove the trunk lock and take it in their shop. Personally, I would not want someone else taking tools to my 57.

                  Keys

                  Paul,

For C1 and C2 Corvettes, from 1953 thru 1966 there were only 1500 different door/ignition key combinations. Key codes ranged from 8000 to 9499 and those same codes were repeated for all years from '53-'66. Given the total number of Corvette made between 1953 and 1966, there is a good chance that a given key will open and start dozens of different C1 and C2 Corvettes, thru '66. Key things got somewhat more secure starting in 1967.

                  Gary

Just to add to this, my 59 had 2 different keys when I bought it 20+ years ago, and neither worked on the glovebox. I bought some old chevy tumblers at a flea market, took them apart and removed the little brass tumbler bits by removing the ss cover plates. Took my glovebox and ign locks apart and found the right comos of bits to make everything match. I then had 1 key for everything.
