    Dave, I don't believe the dist. was there when the engine was painted. I think the hole was pluged etc. There is the distrib. band with NO paint on it. If the hold down was in place there wouldn't be paint under the bolt, which there is.Most all the access's, brackets, carb,distrib.,pullys were added after the orange painting.

      Speaking to several authoritative sources who visited the Flint GM engine plant and witnessed mid year engine assembly, the distributor was in place to test run the engine. Following the test run a hood was dropped over the distributor to mask it from the engine paint. Overspray resulted on most of the engines following this process.
