    67 Speedminder question

In both Noland Adams book and the 67 judging manual, it indicates that the speedminder speedo has a convex plastic lens on the speedo and tach. I'm looking at an untouched original 67 speedminder from an early May car, and both lenses are concave, and it surely appears to me that if the lenses were convext, the shaft for the knob would be too short. The setscrew on the knob is close to the serrated end, and would not engage the shaft if the lens was placed in a convex configuration.
The cluster has an original green and white identifying "LA" code tag on the back of it.
Am I missing something, or does the JM just pick up something from Noland's book and repeat it? And where did Noland get that info from?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!!

Mike, a 63 is concave, but plastic. I would assume a 67 would be the same, except glass.

        Mike------

I think, perhaps, some folks don't know the difference between the terms "convex" and "concave" and get them "mixed up". Either that, or they're talking about as viewed from the face of the instrument and not as viewed from the driver's seat.

Joe--I appreciate your response, but I think it goes beyond that, since the point is specifically made that it is convex, and that the tachometer lens is convex also, as opposed to the standard cluster lens orientation. Maybe I've been around people putting the lenses in the small 62 gauge clusters in wrong (convex instead of concave) but to call out specifically an incorrect orientation both in the "bible" and in the JM seems odd. I'll stop belaboring the point at this time.

My original untouched speedminder dash cluster has the tach and speedo lenses concave (buldge in as opposed to buldge out) like all the small gauges and the non-speedminder dash on my other original untouched 67.

                    Re: 67 Speedminder question

Several years ago I restored an original speedminder dash in a 1967 coupe and the original orientation was that the concave side was facing the driver. I also opted to replace the lenses because they were scratched to the point of looking "foggy". The reason for this is that they are plastic, the same as the 1963 lenses and not glass like the regular non-speedo lenses 1964-1967. You can save a few dollars when ordering new lenses by drilling the hole for the shaft yourself in the 1963 lenses instead of ordering the 1967 lenses pre-drilled; just use the old lens as a drill guide. Thanks for your input--help me make sure I understand what you mean that the "concave side was facing the driver". So, as you sat in the driver's seat, it was concave when you looked at it? Not meaning to be picky--just trying to make sure I'm not jumping to what I hope you said.
                        Thanks!
