will i lose points if i spray the rear pumpkin cast gray? i think the book shows natural but it was naturaly cast gray. it looks bad and needs something. also what should i do with the rear spring? paint them the same cast gray? what do people normally do?

Yes, you'll lose points if you paint the "pumpkin". Two choices:
1) Thoroughly clean the "pumpkin" by bead blasting or shot peening (requires disassembly). Then:
a) coat it with a light coat of satin finish clear which MIGHT not be detected;
b) coat it with a product like Pre-Lube 6. This shouldn't recieve a deduct but you'll have to re-apply it from time-to-time. Not really a good choice for a driven car.
2) Paint the "pumpkin" with VHT high temperature cast blast (the most "natural" looking cast iron paint I've found). This will merit a deduct, but it will look good and be durable.
