I am changing the original camshaft in my '71 LS6 Corvette, it has a rounded exhaust lobe on #2 cylinder. I have an NOS GM camshaft and lifters to re-install, however I am not sure where to get a correct cylinder head gasket. I believe the GM originals were 3981920 but I'm not positive. What gasket can I use.

Re: 1971 LS-6 cylinder head gasket
LS-6 has aluminum heads, so it needs a "special gasket".
Measure the thickness of the OE gasket, which is most likely composition, and then you can search Felpro, Victor Rienz, and ROL for a suitable replacement that is okay for aluminum heads.
These manufacturers also have cross references on their web catalogs, and napaonnline.com will cross the GM number to Victor Reinz.

Re: 1971 LS-6 cylinder head gasket
Duke,
My car is at Precision Motive in Hayward, CA. So I'm not nearby to be able to measure them, however they are the originals and will have the shop do that. They called me asking if I had some cylinder head gaskets for it, before they began repairs. I have alot of NOS parts for these engines, but not the gaskets.
Of those that you recomended, do you have a particular favorite?- Top

Re: 1971 LS-6 cylinder head gasket
No, I don't have any particulars in mind, but I'm sure you will be able to find several acceptable replacements. My GMPP catalog lists a .039" composition gasket suitable for Mark IVs with al. heads - 12363414
I'm sure Joe will also have some specific recommendations.
I don't know how far the rebuild is along, but I would recommend pistons/gasket to achieve about 10.25:1 CR with the OE cam. (With al. heads I think pushing it to 10.5 is okay.) If you stick with the original 9:1 configuration you can run unleaded regular, but the higher CR will improve torque across the rev range and fuel economy by about 8 percent, but premium fuel is only about 5-7 percent more expensive than regular, so "high" CR is the way to go on a vintage post '70 low CR engine.
