    '72 exhaust extensions

could anyone tell me if the GM exhaust extensions part #'s 3974659 and 3974660 would be correct for my late build (July 13,1972) coupe.I believe they have the welded seam on the bottom. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Roy,

There were 4 different rectangular exhaust tips available from GM. The original production tip for 1970 differed from ones used in '71 & '72. Although this tip was used during the early production of '71 as well. This tip had a weld that ran the perimeter of the back plate (were the pipe extension was welded on) and no weld on the bottom (when tips are positioned on the car). Second production style tip had both the back plate weld and a bottom seam weld, this tip was used thru most of '71 and all of '72 production.

The third style tip is the first GM service one. It doesn't have the perimeter weld around the back plate, but does have the welded seam on the bottom, instead of a continuous weld, it uses a spot weld. The fourth style is the same, but now has GM part #'s stamped into the bottom of each tip.

Detailed descriptions of these tips are in the 1970-'72 Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide available from the online store on this site. A must have for your reference library

            Roy,
I thought I had a late 72 (July 12 build) #21467 but yours is even later. Mine is a low mileage original and a 4 star Bowtie car so it's pretty correct throughout. It has the tips with the weld seam on the bottom and the welded backs as described. There is a good description and sketch in the Judging Guide as Dickie points out. I have a couple of funny things with mine and I'd like to compare notes with you. Things like missing windshield weatherstripping "tails", a 1972 crayon mark on the frame, an odd date code on the spare, a carpet heel pad matching early 71 cars and a few others.
