    56/57 style starter

Can any of you folks tell me which style starter to use on a very early 57 car. The judging standards just say 56 style(open solenoid) and 57 style(closed solenoid) with no month date code. Can I assume that the change was made in 57 right from the get go. Thanks Craig

Thanks Mike I am hoping that you are correct as I just removed the open style and was installing the closed style when I decided to ask the question.

            Craig------

All 1956 Corvette starters used starter nose GM #1929006. This is the "open nose" configuration. All 1957 Corvettes used starter nose GM #1935846. This is the "closed nose" configuration.

Craig, Mike may be correct however you have a very early '57 and the JM may also be right for an early '57. I'd do some more investigation before I'd swap for the closed starter.Might ask Gary Chestnut for his thoughts. Regards,

Yes, at model changeover time and for components like this, such a thing would be possible. If the car currently has a GM #1107627 starter that's dated correctly for the car, that would strongly support that it was originally installed.

Thanks for your input guys, the open style starter that was in the car was date coded for 1955, so I don't think it was correct. I was either going to find another tag or replace with the correct inclosed type starter/solenoid. That is the point I am at right now. I hoping that someone has been here before.

with the info in your most recent post, it would appear the starter in question did not orignate on your 283 as it left st louis. get ya a closed snout starter. mike
