    Re: WHAT CAM?

I have a Richmond 6-speed in my '57 Chevy BelAir with a 427 BBC and a 3:54 Dana 60 rear end. When I ordered my transmission about ten years ago, you could specify several different overdrive ratios. Since my engine has rectangular port heads and a fairly lumpy hydraulic cam, I specified the 0.81 ratio overdrive so the engine wouldn't lug excessively. With 28.5 inch tall tires and the 3;54 rear, 80 mph is about 2600 RPM. I have the 3.27/1 first gear and doing the math that makes the final drive a bit more than a 4:56 ratio would be with a close ratio Muncie. However, as one of the other respondents mentioned, there are less bulky 6 speeds available now that you won't have to cut up your car to install, but it's worthwhile to carefully consider the available ratios before you install. With the L88 cam a really high overdrive may prove to be unusable.
