    BB Alternator mounting bracket

On a big block car with no PS or AC is the alternator mounting bracket to the engine the same for all years or did it change at some point? I had always thought there was only one mounting bracket for all the years.

The reason I ask is I recently bought a 69 BB and while comparing it to my 68 I noticed the alternator mounting brackets are different and it changes the belt routing. On the 68 the water pump captive belt is closest to the engine and the alt belt runs on the second groove out. On the 69 they are reserved. Everything else is the same.

    John-----

The alternator mounting bracket for all 1966-74 Corvettes with big block and without P/S was the same-----GM #3882810. However, 1965 Corvettes with big block used a different bracket.

Thank you, that is what I was thinking. Do you know of a way to identify the 65 bracket?

            John-----

I used to know but I've forgotten. Hard to keep all these details from "escaping" my 'noggin. As I learn new stuff, I think some of the old stuff gets away. I've got one around of the 65 pieces around here but it's in my used parts collection and I'm not brave enough to get into that. I don't have a lot of used parts but the ones I have are very "inaccessible". Perhaps Wayne Midkiff will provide info on it.

However, as I vaguely recall, the part number I provided for the 66-74 bracket is embossed upon it. So, if you find that number on it, then you know what you've got.

                Here's a link to Sept 22 thread

I believe there's 3 lower cast iron brackets in all; the '65-only (& hi-horse Chev ?) straight arm; the '66 Corvette (& others ?) which is canted forward to get the alternator belt in the forward groove [has raised rear arm with droop to bolt eyelet], and a third which has the same off-set as the '65 bracket but has the raised rear arm with the droop at the eyelet. There's 2 pics in this thread.

Thanks Wayne, the pictures are a big help. The 69 has the wrong bracket. It has no part number and is similar to the ones you show in the pictures but not exactly the same as any of them. It has the raised arm with the drop so it looks like I have a 66 up piece off of something unknown.

                        John-----

As far as Corvettes go, there were only 2 big block without power steering alternator brackets. The 3863138 used for 1965 and the 3882810 used for 1966-74. The 3863138 was also used for some 1965 passenger cars with big block; the 3882810 was a Corvette-only piece.

As far as the "universe" of alternator brackets for big blocks, there is I don't know how many. Generally, the passenger car brackets were different than Corvette. Plus, the big block was used in a wide array of truck applications. There may have been several different brackets used for those applications. Without a number on the bracket, it's extremely difficult to say what bracket you have. However, the 3882810 is the one you need. This bracket was actually available in SERVICE until not too long ago. So, there are plenty of them around.
