    Original 1970 backup lenses?

    Hello all,

I have a question regarding correct 1970 backup lamp lenses...

The judging manual lists the lettering on the BRAKE lamp lenses ( GUIDE 19 SAE STI 70, in the outer ring of the lens ), but mentions nothing about the lettering on original BACKUP lenses.

I have a pair of backup lenses with the following lettering on them, can anyone tell me if these are correct for an early 70 (VIN in the 2000's) ?

They are the conical type lenses and have "GUIDE 19 SAE RA 70" on the white part of the lens and "GUIDE 19 SAW RB 69" on the red part of the lens.

    Thank you for any help!

    Kevin

    Kevin-----

They sound like they are correct to me for a 1970 or early 1971.

Hi Kevin. I'm no expert, but I've never seen a 70 backup lens with two sets of characters like yours on the front. Every one I've ever seen, original and repo, only have GUIDE 19 SAE RA 70 on the edge of the clear part of the lens, and "Guidex" on the upper left of the red part.

And the only difference I've been able to discern between an original and repo 70 backup lens is that the clear part of an original is glued somewhat carelessly so that the glue is very obvious.

I'd be interested to hear what others think. I wonder if yours could be a transitional lens between 69 and 70?

This is an interesting idea, as I have found a late 1969 with these backup lenses... with a VIN in the 35,000 range.

That would put my 70 (2000's VIN) and the 69 (35,000's VIN) with the same backup lenses, assuming both are actually original.

If I am remembering right, the 69 and 70 in this example would have been built roughly 1 1/2 months apart or so.... ???

My 1970 (#2161) Has the marks you cite on the white portion of the back-up lens, but only the Guide logo on the red part as Patrick cites.
