    Re: 70 Corvette Matching Numbers??

Are there any other ways to tell what year a body is from besides the vin tag.Meaning minor differences between 70-71-72.What about engine compartment parts, vacuum canisters hoses ect.

You would have to know the model years of interest EXTREMELY well to be able to spot the minor differences. You would also have to be careful that the items are more or less permanently attached to the body, and not easily interchangeable to indicate a different year.

One of the most foolproof ways, if you have adequate access, is dates on the body panels themselves. Some of the body panels without undercoating will have hand written dates, and most will have embedded date tags. Since the date tags are generally covered by undercoating or hidden inside the body, a seller is not generally going to allow you to satisfy your curiosity by stripping off his undercoating. If the car is yours, then strip away if you're planning to redo the undercoating anyway. For example the inner fenders will have date tags on the lower rear part of the wheel well; the date will be expressed as WW-YY, where WW is the week of the year, and YY is the year.

Where does this VIN derivative come from? Is it from the frame location I previously described?

If you want a quick check, I just remembered that there should be a date tag on the underside of the nose panel that you may be able to see more or less easily depending on your state of deconstruction (inspection mirror, strong light). It should be just to the right of the driver side headlight door opening. If the front end hasn't been repaired with that panel replaced, that date tag will give a quick confirmation on the model year.

You will find the date tags on most panels, but not all, and they will always be in places where they won't be seen by observers.

My 1970 has a white tag imbedded into the rear of the right front wheel well on a triangular piece of fiberglass near the bottom of the fender flare. It has a blue logo and the name of the manufacturer. More importantly, it is stamped with the date and month that the front clip was molded by the supplier. Use a little solvent to wipe the undercoating off. I'll try to post a picture of it later tonight. Your VIN is about two weeks older than my car, so I would suspect that, if original, your clip would have the same tag.

Joe, That number is on the front pad 70S411547. the number on the block is 3970010. I am going to try and post pictures of the pad in a little bit. Technical difficulties with my digital camera right now. Got the pictures but my batteries went dead, new batteries, still says they are dead. If someone changed the vin on the windshield post and the trim tag, they did a helluva job because they sure look just like the ones on my 71. At the bottom side of the vin on the windshield post there is rust and the bottom tip of the vin is the same. The trim tag is very snug on the door also- no gaps at all around it. The frame location may take some time like maybe next weekend to try and get under there and see what I can find. I will post as soon as I get the pictures on there. Kris

Those are the tags I was referring to above...I noted today while working on the car that the date tags at the rear of the front wheel well are actually on the triangular reinforcements at the bottom. The inner fender date tags are actually high in the front of the wheel well near the fender/inner fender bond.

Joe and everyone else who has helped- I have got 6 pictures posted. Just go to flickr.com and search horsepowerhaven. The pictures are posted there along with a few pictures of a couple of our corvettes. Be sure to leave out the e when you put in flickr and horsepowerhaven all one word. I have pad on the block and the trim tag. Kris
