C2:67 Has anyone used one of these kits

Repair kit for the top ignition shield. Figuring to replace the front grounding clip which broke off in 69.

Any tips here. No instructions in the package, and I thought I saw some publication or post in the past on this.

Just wondering why they include 5 rivets and 5 plastic plugs when I only have 2 rivets and 2 plastic plugs on my original top ignition shield:

Also the plastic insulator has 3 holes instead of my 2 on my original.

Are they are figuring I'm going to screw up a couple of times? Or do different models other than a 67 base engine have more rivets and plugs.

Inquiring minds would like to know. Any tips appreciated. Maybe there's a story in this.

63 uses metal rivits (three) on the top as well as the two in the front. Same reason the insulator has the three holes. Generic reproduction, not completely correct for judging.

I replaced my clip. Its a easy job. Used a clip from LIC. I didn't like there rivets so I got some from work. Put some tape over the rivet head and the area so you don't mark it up with the rivet gun. Washers on the back and if you have a very thin piece of rubber use it on top of the washer and it will help keep the washer in place when you are holding the bucking bar down. You also should have to correct size rivet set that fits the head of the rivet. A second set of hands helps to.

Re: C2:67 Has anyone used one of these kits

        Hi Jerry:

When I did the insulator in my 67 shield, I didn't like the looks of the insulator that I got with the first kit I ordered, so I ordered one from another vendor. I found that from one vendor the insulator itself was much closer to my original, while the plastic rivets from the other vendor were much closer to my originals. So, I combined the two kits to get the right look. After having my car judged several times, the judges have never made a deduction on the shield.

That being said, I can't quite recall who the two vendors were. I *think* they were LIC and Zip. If it's important to you to know for sure, I might be able to dig up the info.

          Joe,

Why can't they reproduce things like the originals. I'm not concerned about the insulator, my original is in pretty good shape and I'm just going to clean it up a bit.

But the rivets with the kit are too small and the washers completly unsat. So I'm going to find some rivets that match (I think I have a couple coming) and then reuse the original washers. Ain't going to touch this thing until I am sure that when I redo it, it will look like it has never been touched.

          Ain't worth screwing with otherwise.

          Regards,

Jerry, did your kit come with a tube type rivet not a solid shaft. If so its the same as mine and I didn't like the rivets.

              Mike,

Yes they came with the tube type. The shaft, and head is smaller than the originals, as well as the washers.

Going to try to save the original washers and reuse them.
