    C1 Carburetor Vent Tubes

Hello, I have recently puchased a 1956 Corvette 265 cu. in. with the dual Carter 4-Barrel set up. For some reason the 4 vent tubes have been removed from the carburetors, is this done for a reason as I was going to buy some and re-fit them. The engine seems to run OK but a bit smokey at idle.

    Thanks in advance,
    Paul.

No, it won't change the smoke, but if the carb overflows you'll be safer.

I'm pretty familar with the '56 2X4 set-up. They are a pretty straight forward set-up. Cast iron throttle base holdsdown the butterfly valves rod slop. Make sure the throttlevalves are compltely closing off in the base. The smallest air leaks past them will cause you idle and gas milage problems. The throttle valves have to be loosened from the butterfly rods and jockied into perfect placement. Takes quite a bit of time to do correctly.
Chuck Smith sells some rods that should be installed to decrease gas flow plus the ;56 Service Bulletin suggests using '57 Chevy idle tubes. You may be able to get your '56 into the 17 MPG range with a 3.70 rear end. It's running pretty lean in that range. Good Luck, and learn all about your 2X4 set-up you can for yourself. Regards,

You mean these tubes? I dunno if it needs them, some WCFB carbs seem not to have had them.

this type of bowl vents were installed on WCFB carbs used on corvettes to try and prevent them from flooding out in sharp turns when road racing and autocrossing.

Many thanks for your responses as always, have managed to get hold of some and will fit them even though they probably wont make much difference.

            Kind Regards,
            Paul.
