Fan mounted backwards -- anyone tried ?

Here's an eBay listing; scroll down to engine compartment pics. Fan blade assy. is bolted backwards to the clutch. Anyone ever tried this ? With what results ?

Can't tell for sure, but isn't the power steering arm connected to the outside lug on the wheel hub. Take a look.

If so, and with the fan, it must be a wild ride.

Makes you pretty confident in the mechanical portion of the restoration, doesn't it?

I saw a car on the judging field with the fan installed backwards..........

Mike, I'm changing my 64 to the race 'look' of no spark plug heat shields and the battery cut off on the positive battery post, probably makes for a nice arc when applied!!!! Helps light up the engine compartment though for night work!

Turning the fan over doesn't change the direction of the air flow, it just makes the fan much less efficient. It's the same principle as a cupped propeller on a boat. In the case of flipping a fan blade over, the pitch of the blade remains at the same angle, only the concave/convex are reversed. If there was no concave in the blade turning it over would have no effect in efficiency even.

One way to blow the hot air away from the passenger compartment. I wonder if it would work with the BIG BLOCKs?????????

                      I've seen how it works...

Place I work in the summer, guy brought in an old Mustang complaining of overheating. Non-clutch fan was on backwards. Flipped fan around, overheating stopped. Pretty significant, if you ask me.

We used to do this on heavy equipment (bulldozers) in the summer so the operator would stay cooler instead of getting baked from the heat coming off the engine. Fan worked just as good as pusher and I stayed a lot cooler.

Somehow the point is getting missed here (which I posted above):

Turning the fan over WILL NOT reverse the air flow. The leading edge WILL STILL face the angle of rotation. The only thing it does is flip the concave to a convex, lessening the efficiency, but the air flow is still in the same direction.

                            Norris is right

If you analyze it, putting the fan on backwards does not reverse the direction of air flow, it just makes the fan less efficient. In order to get a pusher fan, you would have to reverse the direction of rotation of the fan.

Exactly............. or either grab the individual blades with a big pair of channel locks and twist the pitch about 60 or 80 degrees to the left. (now if I could just figure out how to put those neat smiley faces on here)
