1986 Ignition Timing

I reciently purchased a Shop manual for my 1986 Corvette from Mid America Motor works. I am beginning to think the only page in it that is specific to the 1986 Vette is the cover page with the picture. My latest dilema is setting the ignition timing, the manual states very clearly that you must first disconnect the EST connector from the distributor in order to put it into the Electronic Spark Timing Bypass Mode. According to the pictures the EST connector is the one with four pins and a short pigtail comming out of the back of the distributor, unfortunately when you disconnect it the engine will not run? Any Ideas?

Look on on the firewall between the steering column and the distributor about even with the valve cover and you should find a connector, brown I think. That is what you disconnect.
