    GPS Systems

    Hi all

This is off topic but was mentioned here once. I'm looking to buy a Garmin c550 GPS. I'm wondering if anyone here has one and what they think of it? Or is there a better one out there in the same price range. I can get one for around $360.00? When I start driving my vette cross country, etc. I want to have good directions.

    Thanks...John

    Hi John!

I don't have that exact unit, but I have used Garmins for quite some time and have been very pleased.

        Re: GPS Systems

We bought a Garmin 330 maybe a year ago, and it's improved our marriage during travel.

In my opinion, the Garmin 330 is a better value if you don't need a lot of bells and whistles. You can probably get the 330 for well under $300 now. And trust me, you don't really need the bells and whistles if your first priority is to know how to get there. It's one model above the entry model and comes with the software preloaded; it has the calm feminine voice telling you where to turn, distance to turn, etc. You will find an occasional glitsch (you cannot make a right turn on MOST bridges ), but overall, it'll permit you to handle downtown rush-hour traffic in major cities with a cool head.

Top quality brand name GPS units are available for well under $200. Anything above that is fluff that you probably don't need.

I have a 660 and the only downside is when the wife wakes up she can find the highest speed I went during that time she was asleep as it's stored.

The 340 and the 350 have the ability to announce turns etc. with street names not just turn in X distance. If you do not need MP3 player, or blue tooth, the 340 has the same GPS capabilities.

                      My lowly Lowrance iWay 250

plots the course, speaks to me in a multitude of seductive international accents, guides me back on the road to salvation when I stray, sings me songs and shows me lovely pictures. All for under $200

Sorry, I meant the c550 and the c340 the same except for the extra MP3 and bluetooth.

the young tech heads at work told me the tomtom is more user friendly and cheaper at about $200. i bought 3 for myself and family members and liked it better than the garmins i have had in rental cars.

Mine is named, Miss. Know-It-All. Between her and my wife, I never get lost anymore, well most of the time anyway, except when I disregard both of them. It sure is fun to make both of them mad at the same time.
