What is the best matching and most durable chevy orange. This is for a 67. Anyone had any luck with POR 15?

POR-15 is VERY durable (maybe too durable if you ever want to remove it). However, it won't look anything like stock engine paint----it's WAY too thick looking.

Quanta engine orange and the Seymour paint available from Paragon are both good and PLENTY durable enough. The original engine paint was NOT high gloss; it was more of a semi-gloss. Many engine paints are WAY too high gloss.

Paragon chevy orange...

Hey Joe. I used the Paragon paint and it appears to be something other than Seymour. I can get the Seymour for half the price.

This is not the same product as I got the last time I got paint from Paragon. However, that's been quite some time so they must have changed suppliers. Maybe this is better.

What's the gloss level on the Paragon DB paint? Is a good match to the GM original?

Gary, gloss level is a difficult issue for me. New uncured paint is far more glossy than my 42 year old sample. I tested five different brands all of which appeared glossy including the Paragon stuff. Application thickness and underlying material also greatly effect the level of gloss. Cast parts appear duller while the valve covers, timing chain cover, and oil pan appear glossier. Bottom line....for my 65, I am happy with it.

Try Bill Hirsh for the Chevy Orange engine paint. It's dead nuts. At first it's a tag shiney but after the engine is hot it dulls down. A lot of restoration shops are using it. Most of the Chevy orange out there is much too fake looking. Too glossy. John

Bill Hirsh Auto has a web site. Scroll way down to the bottom of the page to see if catalog. Chevy Orange. $33.00 a qt or 14.00 for a spray can. It's the real deal. John

Gary, You missed my other post. Spray cans available for 14 buks. Not cheap for a lousy spray can though. But what are you going to do. You could buy the qt can from them for 33 buks and take it to Car Quest and they can put it in spray cans for you and the cost will then be cut at least in half. John

Gary...Never used the Quanta stuff. Many knowledgeable posters here believe chevy orange changed over the years. Doubt if one vendor's product would be dead-nuts for all years. I know what the original 65 color looks like today. My motor still had the grease markings, original bearings, and had never been rebuilt. The original water pump was stored since 68. The BD is pretty close.

Here's my '67 with the Quanta orange; gloss is substantially lower than any of the other "Chevy Orange" paints I've tried - most are way too glossy.

I have used Seymour rattle can paint on my 67 and have been happy with the results. This photo was taken after engine rebuild and still on the cradle. It appears too red and glossy but I will post another photo taken a minute later which has a more orange look. The gloss dulled down after break in but I don't have a photo after break-in.
