    starter question

Has anyone ever heard of tilton staters? My motor is running with the timing real advanced. So when it gets hot its hard to turn over. The tilton starter i'm looking at is a 3hp high torque. But i never really heard of them.Any responses will be helpful..Thanks

    install a kill switch

Use the stock starter with an ignition kill switch. Shut off the ignition, get the engine cranking, then turn on the ignition - works every time and still looks stock. Worked like a charm on my 12:1 compression 427.

We had a Tilton on the race car worked excellent but didn't look anything like a Chevy starter.

        Ken,

I ran a Tilton on my BB 67 racecar and it worked real well. We ran 13:1 compression and didn't have any trouble. I would normally start it by first spinning the engine and then hitting the ignition, but it would also easily crank the engine over with the ignition on also.

Infact we used to "eat" the high torque starters, even had one "specially prepared" just for my application only to have it melt down in the staging lanes one day. Bought the Tilton the next day and never haven't any trouble since.

Get your starter rebuilt by John Pirkle. He uses high torque innards and your starter will spin over an airplane.
He did mine, and it starts on the first turn no matter how hot it gets. Before that I couldn't start my 68 with a brand new battery when it was hot because the engine was just rebuilt and is very tight. John's starter solved the problem and everything looks factory original so no judge will know what is inside.

get a big block starter and remove the cast iron nose and install an aluminum nose for a small block. It will look more correct than an after market and be much cheaper than Pirgle.

              starter question

I want to thank everyone for there input. I bought a tilton starter for a few reasons.1st.. because of the 3hp. 2nd.. I thought the price 83.00 was very reasonable for the product...3rd...3 year warranty. Not really concerned with the originality since it is more of a driver. Again..thank you for all your input
