I am looking for likely places to examine or possible causes for a a fuel leak or fumes. I notice of recent that when the garage is closed up for some time, more than usual I can smell an increased amount (too much) of fumes. It is a frame off restoration of a 64 365 hp car, there are no leaks at the carb, fuel filter, in and out fittings fuel pump or iteself, rubber frame line to pump hose, dry frame rail, non leaking fuel sending unit and rubber hose, also no wetness around the top of the fuel tank at the fill collar, also it has a new Quanta tank. The fuel cap is NOS with paper gasket. The tank fuel level does not affect the amount of fumes? The seams of the tank appear dry. Car is running great? I have had the car in the air several times and I cannot find a loose or leaking fitting? Any thoughts?

Re: C2 - Gas Fumes
Dino,
Sounds like you've checked all the likely places. Have you been buying different gas? By that I mean do you have the 10% alcohol gas. Because the carb and tank are open vented it seems that the current gas with the alcohol content evaporates faster than straight gas so this could be your source. Try plugging the carb vents and tank overflow hose to see if there is any difference.

Re: C2 - Gas Fumes
Next time you drive your car and park in the garage, go back to the car after about 30 minutes and remove the air cleaner lid and look inside the carb for wet fuel. If you don't find any, check it in a hour or when you smell fuel. Had the problem of the fuel smell in the garage and discovered wet fuel in my Holley carb. The carb problem was the float, newer Holley than yours, it came a nylon/plastic float. The float was keeping the needle/seat open because it had developed a leak and had taken in enough fuel to sink. Replaced the float with a metal one from Holley. If your needle/seat has trash keeping it open or has worn to the point it is not sealing you could have leakage.- Top

Jim, Thats some good feedback...I never have gone back and looked inside for a wet plenum or carb. I guess the reason is that it linergs for days. It is an all stock era 2818 Holley. I will give it a try.Dino Lanno- Top

Re: C2 - Gas Fumes
Wayne, I wouldn't call it hard to start, but it does kick right over as when the engine is cold cranked....it takes a little coaxing but not to bad. What are the solutions if I find that the problem is that the carb is wet?Dino Lanno- Top
