    Muncie 4 speed vin question

I removed my M 20 4 speed from my 66 corvette. I have checked all the numbers on the cases, side covers, tail section, tag, and date code and they all check out correct for my car. But!! I don't find a vin number on the trans. anywhere and I don't find any place where one might have been removed. Did all 66 corvettes have a vin stamped in their trans.? My car is a very early 66 my vin is 194676s100298. (birth date September 7 1965 ) The date code on the trans. is p0902 ( September 2 ) Can anyone give me any insight on this? Thanks, Bruce

    Bruce,

The M20 transmission in my late May 1965 car has the car VIN # stamped on the passenger side main case vertical flange.

Same with my July 29, 1965 car (third to last day of '65 production).

        Bruce-----

All 1966 Corvettes were supposed to have the VIN derivative stamped on the transmission (vertical surface of the main case). Is it possible that one got through without the VIN derivative stamping? I'd say very possible. This would be a very difficult thing for an inspector at the plant to pick-up on, and I doubt very much that it fell into the category of a "high priority" item for the line assemblers.

Kinda wondered about that myself. Th 67 L-79 I have has a trans of 3885010 Build P7B20 But No Vin stamped. The 3892657 /327 Engine Pad is VO220HT Same day stamp. Casting date Engine= B 3 7 So all lines up, maybe some trans did slip thru with no stamp.

My 66 L79 convertible (March build car) has the VIN stamped in it's M21 tranny on the drivers side.

My '64 also has the VIN stamped on the driver side of the main case - just behind the side cover. A very clean stamping, at that. ..
