1966 Coupe Painting

I have finally decided to get my 1966 coupe re painted to the original color, Laguna Blue. The PPG paint code is #13188, base coat, clear coat. I am meeting with the painter this week to "OK" the color of the tint. He has told me it is very difficult to match the original formulas that were in lacquer and many manufactures use updated formulas. Since I have never seen an original 1966 laguna blue car, only pictures, I find this task a little difficult. Has anyone just used the PPG paint code, especially laguna blue, and been happy with the color? Any experience is appreciated.

Clark - I can help you with this one! I recently painted my 66 Laguna Blue using the PPG 13188 but in lacquer (DDL-13188). When your painter looks up that code in the PPG database he will come up with "Balboa Blue Poly" which must be the name the 13188 code evolved into. My car had what was left of the original paint on it when I pulled it out of a field. I kept an intact section of the original paint by cutting out a square behind the license plate and glassing in a patch.

My first test panel directly from the PPG mixing formula came out just a shade dark but not much. By comparing with my original sample, the paint store added a small amount of one of the mixing colors to lighten up the batch (sorry I don't know how much of what color). My next test panel was perfect.

In lacquer, the metallic size is right and the you'll see green, burgundy, and black just like the original.

I wouldn't want to lose this section of original Laguna Blue but I'd certainly be happy to figure out a way for you to use it (send a note to tehlers@hess.com).
