    69 ZL-1 Corvette

Whatever happened to the white 69 ZL-1 Corvette that was in Otis Chandler's collection? I think he passed away and I never heard any more about this car.

    Thanks,
    Rex

It is in the Kevin Suydam's collection

This website is an online photo gallery of the cars in Kevin Suydam's extensive Musclecar collection. This collection consists of over 100 plus of the rarest Corvettes and American high performance muscle cars ever produced. Click on each category thumbnail to enter that particular group. To view full sized photos, doubleclick on thumbnail photos to enlarge them. The website is constantly in process of updates. Keep checking back as there are over 10 cars in various stages of restoration yet to be posted. There are also newly obtained cars for which good photos need to be taken, weather permitting. *Update* 1/11/23 Added approximately 25 cars (Mostly Mopars) but need to add more photos of each car, such as interior and engine compartment. Then type descriptions for each one. Kevin is always interested in adding to his collection--specifically American and Canadian high performance muscle cars and Corvettes. His primary interest is the 1967 to 1971 model years and the cars could be restored or in need of restoration but they must be authentic. If you yourself have such a supercar, factory or dealer high performance car or race car for sale, or know of others email Kevin.

Since the yellow one and the red one are fully documented, where does that leave the white one? Could there have been three, and the GM records be wrong?

There was also a blue one on the cover of a magazine a LONG time ago that the owner said he could prove was the #2 car.

Which one was it that the IRS agent owned formerly and if I remember correctly he signed an affidavit saying it was authentic and there was no other documentation?

The rumor is that there were 8 ZL1's

Originally there were "supposed" to have been 8 ZL1's to be built. Apparently the first one - the yellow one - caused so much trouble that the order was cancelled and the planned remaining cars were sold as L88's. The big question is whether they had an L88 or ZL1 build sheet on the tank when they left the factory and even if they did, rumor has it they went to big name racers so the tank sheets would likely have been tossed.

File that away in the "urban legend" drawer. By the way, the factory lost a lot of $$$ trying to fix all the ZL1 engines that kept breaking. It seems they had a problem with main bearings spinning - expansion of the blocks released the bearing crush or something like that. Apparently a bunch of the Camaros and the Yellow ZL1 had their engines replaced. (But now have the "original" engines )

we used ZL-1 blocks in dirt race cars and the bottom end did show some movement but we never spun a bearing. i had more trouble with ZL-1 "clone" blocks made by dove engineering in ohio than GM blocks after you could not get GM or yenko blocks. john maher orignal ZL-1 engine was just rebuilt and was dyno tested here several months ago.

                  Clem,

Can you post the dyno numbers from that engine?

                  Thank you,

                  Verle

john has the sheets and he put in the GM short track cam,#340282 because his ZL-1 has a THM 400 and this cam works better, more torque down low than the #3959180 cam so the max HP is not up there with a #3959180 cam
