    Re: Food For thought

Eric, I think I know why you're getting a lot of unrelated hits, and I may be able to help. When I first tried to search the archives, I got the same frustrating results as you.

I discovered that the reason this happens is because the search page defaults to "any terms", for whatever terms you enter for search. For example, if you enter the phrase "caliper bolt", it will search for all entries of "caliper", all entries of "bolt", and all entries of "caliper bolt". Needless to say, all the entries for "bolt" will be an unmanageable number, and most will be unrelated to what your interest.

If you select "all terms" from the drop down menu, it will only search for entries of all the entered terms combined, i.e. "caliper bolt". You will find that the archives will become very useful with this one little change.

          Good Post, Brett...

All your points are good advice for us all. This is a good organization of good people, and I'm proud to a part of it myself.

In a moment of confession, I will admit that "cliqueish" berating of uninitiated visitors was a grievous fault of the old Discussion Board. In a few instances, it was unmercifully harsh; visitors were unfamiliar with our twisted senses of humor, and often took our jokes as insult when none was intended. Unfortunately, as reactive posts flew, the insults became intentional.

Those participants, which included myself, would have argued that in some cases such treatment was deserved...but it was still wrong and it had to be stopped. In my opinion, harsh interaction with visitors was the one of the primary reasons that NCRS shut down the old Discussion Board, but I could be wrong. I don't want to see that happen again.

I guess it is just me then. You see my Corvette thing is a lot different than a lot of yours. My phone rings none stop with questions. I do my best to answer the same old stuff day in and day out for an eon now. I do my best to be polite and hear about every nut, bolt and modificiation and their childhood.
So I guess I am just getting a little old and burnt out with all the questions.

One or more of you replied to just ignore the question and let someone else handle it. Great idea.
That appears to be a solution.
One thing that makes this forum unique is that it is open to a variety of questions. Also we do break the rules a lot even though we are warned not to do so.That we should be more concerned about than the repeat questions.
Sorry to bother you with such a dumb food for though post.
I realize a lot of you enjoy answering the same questions day in and day out. That's a good thing as we are getting new members all the time. Our local chapter has been getting a lot of new members and we old ones need to teach them the ropes and be patient with them as we tend to forget we were once the new kid on the block. Not enough time is spent welcoming new members and our chapter has been working on making them welcome. I guess it all ties in together. New members and therefore repeat questions. That's life. Thanks very much, John

Chuck, I know about the any terms and all entries. I find the archives hard to search also. I have spent hours going through posts and never finding what I need. Other times it works fine. When some words are common and used in a lot of unrelated posts it becomes very frustrating and seems like there is no end to searching. I did learn things when reading the untelated posts though.

                      Lyle,
I don't believe that was the intent of the original post at all. Not a bad question; just ones that are repeated often.

Repeat is the word I should have used. Bad was a bad choice.
