    58-62 dash wiring harness

I just received what was supposed to be an NOS main wiring harness for 58-62, and though I have never seen an over-the-counter replacement harness from GM, I strongly suspect that this one is a reproduction. It was purchased from a small-time, retired vendor on the east coast, sight unseen. He assured me it was NOS. The light bulb sockets are black plastic instead of cadium-plated/zinc-plated steel and the colors of the repro wires are several shades different than my original harness. Also, harness is wrapped in adhesive-backed black vinyl tape. Am sure that there are other differences but these seem to stand out the most.

What are the chances of finding a truly NOS main harness?? Or, secondly, are any wiring harnesses being produced that match, or very closely match, an original harness as to connections and wire colors??

Any tips, suggestions or other info would be greatly appreciated. Larry

Probably would have been best to go with...

...Lectric Limited current reproduction harness. What you purchased certainly does not sound like a NOS or accurate repro of anything... Kinda sounds like a very early (long ago) repro... Will it work? - Probably. Best, Dennis

Re: Probably would have been best to go with...

Almost everyone in the repro wiring harness business EXCEPT M&H uses 'service replacement' style black plastic lamp sockets on their dash harness assy's...

M&H took the time to re-tool reproductions of the factory original stamped metal lamp sockets and make their harness assy's more correct/authentic. The original tooling for the metal lamp sockets has LONG been dead/gone and injection molded plastic is what GM and others have used for quite some time.

To the original poster: Remember NOS does NOT mean the item is the same as what GM originally used during initial production! All it means is 'new old stock' and MANY GM service replacement items vary markedly from those originally used by the factory during production. There's no substitute for knowing what's right and asking the key questions BEFORE you buy...

        Hi all

I bought my Wire Harness for my 62 vette from Lectric Limited a few years ago and it had all metal lamp sockets like my original harness. And everything fit good.

The dash harness I got from LL 4 years ago has metal lamp sockets.

              Re: 58-62 dash wiring harness

I bought a nors wiring harness years ago that was in a GM package, but had plastic lamp holders. I sent it back. So, I assume that L.L. are good and accurate harnesses? I am going to replace all wiring in my '62.

Many thanks to all of you who took time to respond to my concerns for wiring harnesses. Your comments have given me the right direction. Larry
