    C1 Steering Box??

When turning the steering wheel to make a right turn, every 1.33 ish turns it jumps without the front wheels changing directions. The steering linkage does not move either The car is not driveable at the moment (being restored) but I have no doubt the steering wheel will jump if the road wheels were rolling. Has any one had - or fixed a simular problem. Some advice would be really appreciated. Thanks to anyone who replies. Mark

    Re: C1 Steering Box??

Years ago when I was driving my '59 on a daily basis, I was crossing a long bridge in the wintertime and I pulled a classic move by sliding on a icy patch. The car did a 180 and I was traveling along backwards about 60 mph, hit the bridge curbing and folded the left front wheel under the car at about a 45 degree angle. I towed the car home and replaced the lower swing arm and wheel. After that, anytime I turned the steering wheel (either direction) there was a "catch" in the wheel about every 1 turn to 1 1/2 turns.

I took the steering gearbox out and....lo and behold....I had a small chunk of metal busted out of my sector roller, causing the "catch". Every time the worm gear rotated around to where the sector roller engaged it. These old gearboxes work pretty well except when a large force is applied the wrong way through the box! I replaced the worm and sector and everything returned to normal. I still have the sector roller as a reminder to slow down on icy bridges!

Mark, I'm inclined to agree with Brad. While rebuilding my '55 I took out the steering column and checked the gears. Mine would clunk when turning the wheel. I had hoped that fresh grease and an adjustment would take care of the problem, but when I cleaned the box out and inspected the gears, mine were chipped as well. Bit the bullet and ordered a replacement set from Corvette Central, followed instructions in ST12 and John Hinckley's article on steering box rebuilds. It was pretty straight forward. Only issue I had was getting old bearing races out, took them to a machine shop and they "shrunk" them with a welder and they literally fell out. Total cost was a bit over $500 US. If you are still in England, shipping would be more... Still worth the time and money when you consider what could happen to your investment with faulty steering. Check your adjustments first, then if that does not help, consider yanking the steering and tearing it down to inspect. Best of luck! Mike
