    57 - 62 RPO heavy duty brakes

Were the finned drums riveted to the hubs..for all years..front and back? When cooling fins were added..were they positioned in the drums riveted to the hubs?

      Re: No & No.

Let me change the language from riveted to ( permanantly attached ). As I have looked at a set of 57/58 design finned drums this year at Bloomington and two were still attached to the hubs...( not just slipped over the studs ).

Today I talked to another guy who has some second design 59 - 62 finned drums still on the chassis and he said they were riveted onto the hubs.

In both cases the drums have the proper casting # on the face of the drum.

A third person with years of experience..commented the front drums were attached to the hubs as a total assemble..not just slipped over the studs..like the rears???

      Looking for clarification.

      Thanks,

      Joe

        YES & NO.

Joe, we spoke on the phone a year or two ago about my early 58' #1327 Big Brake car. It was never used as a race car and was found in a very original, unmolested, and unrestored condition. Its front drums ARE riveted to the hubs as one assembly and the rear are not. I read somewhere that this was for extra hub strength and changed in 59' when the factory improved the metalurgy (wrong spelling) of the front hubs resulting in not needing the added strength of the riveted brake drums. I have some unrestored and restored photos if you need them.

What years were standard drums riveted to the hubs? Through 57 for sure. Also 58? 59? My guess is that when they made the change in the standard hub procedure, that they made the change across the board. I've never seen an original 60-62 with riveted drums/hubs either standard or RPO.(686 or 687)

I read an article that Dr. Gerald C. Wagner posted on the internet and I will quote:
"In 1959 thicker, stronger front hubs appeared on all Corvettes and gas-filled shocks replaced the earlier ones-both on base and RPO cars. The stronger hubs dropped the extra holes necessary to rivet the base front brake drums to them".
The article was mainly about RPO 684 & 687 cars. My 58' RPO 684 is an early production car, #1327. Hubs and drums only on the front are definetely riveted together.

One of my earliest memories of the late

Dick Daleiden is him walking into a Phoenix Corvette shop carrying his two front drums and asking "Why are these things on my car?". They were not attached to anything - I believe the VIN was #1405.
But that was back in the Dark Ages - rather than offer to buy them when he was going to throw them away, I told Dick that he might want to consider "keeping" the dated HD shocks.......
