I'm looking at a 72 LT1 convertible tomorrow that is a two owner car with very, very low miles. Under 10K. Several options, no A/C. The owner has already told me that the tank sticker is missing (long story). He had it, but lost it. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there might be a build sheet under the dash pad? I found a sheet under the dash of a friends 74, while replacing his tach. The car is expensive, so I don't want to get in over my head if it's not worth it. The car has been messed with a little, but not bad. Build sheet locations? Will it hurt the value? Thanks for your help.

Re: Tank Sticker
Well, not having any of the factory documentation, such as the protect-o-plate & pamphlet, Corvette Order Copy sheet or window invoice won't help its value. You won't have any way of verifying whether the options on the car were factory installed or owner installed.
Some owners over on the Corvette Forum has expressed that they did indeed find a copy of the "build sheet" behind the dash, underneath the rear carpet on their '70, & '72 models.- Top

Re: Tank Sticker
installing factory options on a 72 LT1 would not be worth the effort as the "change" would be labor extensive to the point one would lose money to fake a car---not to be rude but, as stated in this string the LT1 is in the vin and that is what sets the value of an 72 LT1 vet more so than the options,JMHO---phil- Top

Re: Tank Sticker
I found the build sheet for my original owner 68 behind the radio and the build sheet for my original owner 70 was in the wiring behind the tack. Does the owner selling, the second owner, have contact information for the first owner?- Top

Re: Tank Sticker
No he does not. He can't remember his name, since he bought the car in 1980 and never planning on selling it. It should be easy to do a title search in his state, but this guy doesn't even have a computer. I'm hoping he will allow me to remove the passenger side of the dash to see if it's there, or at least the lower console panel. Thanks for you help.- Top

Jerry
I have been ask to leave just checking numbers on a corvette so good luck asking to tear the dash out. On a 72 the the letter you checked in the VIN is good proof of a real 72 LT-1. Paper work would be more important on a 70 or 71. The colors are on the trim tag the transmission is a four speed. Not having A/C I see the rest of the options to not be a big deal. The owner may find the tank sticker someday or you may find one somewhere on a car with this low of mileage.

Re: Tank Sticker
Jerry, Lyle brings up a good point. I would not let anyone dig around my 68 or 70 unless the cahsiers check was in my hand just to look for the build sheet especially since you know this 72 left the factory as a LT-1. The stamping on the engine will verify it is the original block, the stamping on the 4-speed will identify the type of 4-speed, and the rear end code stamping will verify the rear gears. The expense of this car is LT-1 on the hood which is verified. What are the other options on the car, power steering, power brakes etc. The interior trim code can be verified on the trim tag. Frame rust and windshield frame rusting would be something to really check. If water drips from the rear view mirror that is a very good indication that the upper windshield frame may have rusted through. Garage kept low mileage cars are a real find.- Top

Re: Tank Sticker
I ended up passing on the car today. Too many things had been changed out, leading me to believe that the mileage may not be correct. 6yr. old paint and ALL new interior. It is a real LT1 though. Both tops, PS, PB, TT, Leather, Radio, Rally's. Showing 7,269 miles. No paperwork at all. 50K firm. By the way, I did not take the dash apart, but I told him how to do it. Thanks to everyone.- Top

Re: Tank Sticker
We had a 72 LT-1 conv.with a/c in newspaper (Times-Picayune) the past two
weeks for sale. Asking price 18,500, owned past twenty years. It sold
very fast. Owner didn't know what he had. I spoke to him later in detail.
There still out there folks..........- Top
