    Spare Tire for 63

Installed P215/70R/15 Radials. Spare is on original steel wheel. Set-up is too wide to fit in tire tub. Don't want rear edge of lower tire tub cover to show when in place. What size tire will fit? Want to have same circumference as the other four, but only concerned as an emergency spare, so width I can live with being reduced. Put in an old F78-15 and it almost closes, maybe short by 3/4". Any experience? Thanks

One solution is to buy a repro 6.70-15. It will be narrow enough, but may be too big diametrically. This can be solved by shaving it down to the wear bars.

The other alternative is a used 205/75R-15 that is worn to or near the wear bars, but the problem with this size is it may be too wide. In this case the longer front hanger bolts that were used with KOs is probably a solution.

Rick, My 63 has the original spare and I will tell you there doesn't appear to be any extra room for an oversize tire as Duke mentioned. I remember I had trouble with my other 63 with Firestore replacements for the 6-70's. The replacement would not fit at all in the tub and dummy me let the air out of it and then it fit good.(don't try this at home) Then I carried a can of that tire inflator with me. This was a long time ago though and not what you wanted to here I am sure.
Dukes idea of using the longer KO style bolts or studs hanging down sounds like a good idea. John

Considered the longer bolts, but did not want the edge of the tray showing below the rear valence. Are there no 75 or 70 or the old 83 series in narrower widths that would fit?

Rick, Check the archives as this subject as discussed many times. John

I deflated my Goodyear Regatta spare and was able to get it in the spare tire tub. I also carry a small air compressor. It's still a tight fit but closes with a small gap.

Went through the same thing twice in the last two years. The two other choices are pay threw the nose as I did for non-dot original 6.70-15's for the spare (but don't plan on driving on it).

The Coker Firestone Bias Ply repro spares don't fit either. But I do understand that some of the other brand repros do fit, are DOT, and can be used. You may want to give Coker a call unless you are set on a radial spare.

Want a radial spare to use as a spare in an emergency, as in stuck miles from home and with a flat. Have to trust tire to get me and car safely home. don't want something to be judged, will put on bias plys all around for that, but I am driving the car. Really want a practical spare that ideally would fit in any location (posi-traction rear). Any one using a smaller (185, 195) tire that fits in tub? thanks
