C1 wiper center transmission

How much play or wobble is acceptable for the C1 wiper center transmission (a 1959) that passes through the firewall? I've got two, both have some lateral or rocking motion in the shaft. Has anyone taken one apart and successfully put a bushing on the shaft to increase its life span. I've toyed with the idea of a small zerk fitting just to grease the thing... Any one else dealt with this situation before?

should be minimal play. Good articles from previous Restorer magazine on the CD-ROM about wiper transmissions. Gary....

There's plenty of info out there on transmissions, but not the center piece, also known as the "mounting plate" or by some as the "drum," and that's the one that is hard to come by. I searched my Restorer archives.... I repaired the drum on my first C1, a '60 back in 1971, when I could have bought the replacement part (4651976) for about $20. Not today, hence the inquiry....
