    Mould release coating on tires

Awhile back, there was a question about how to get rid of that pesky mould release compound on tires that gives the tires a dull, brownish look. I use "Black Magic Pro Shine Protectant" from Auto-Zone; spray it on a very damp cloth and apply it to the tire (about 20 squirts total for each tire in 4 squirt increments). Because it's diluted by the damp rag, it gives a non-glossy appearance that looks just like new rubber. It'll last at least a month.

You put this right over the brown mold release ?? I spent an hour with 3M weather strip adhesive remover to get the brown off of mine. My Coker tires were solid brown righ out of the wrapper. Ugly !!

Tom, please excuse my delay in responding, but this web site has been down. Yes, that's exactly what I do--apply it over the brown mould release. I use the same rag that I washed the car with, so the rag may have some soap left in it; the rag is pretty dirty when I'm through. With the wet rag, you can use a fairly large amount of the squirt bottle of protectant without getting a glossy look. I aimed for a semi-glossy look while the protectant was wet, and it dried to a "just right" look. My Michelins were very brown, as were the Firestones, but now they look just right. Nothing to lose by trying it. Incidentally, I made a mistake on where I bought the product; it was at Advance Auto Parts instead of Auto Zone.

Paint thinner works well to remove mold release and is cheap, but consider the rags you use to be throw-aways.

I usually buy tires over the intenet and clean them thoroughly before I take them to be mounted.

I have the Coker Radial Gold lines on my 65. I used Westely's white wall cleaner and a medium stiff brush. It not only gets rid of the ugly brown mold release agent, it also lightened up the orange tone in the gold lines a little. They look a whole lot better than they did.

For a non glossy finish, try Super Clean in the purple jug. Just spray it on and watch the brown run off any tire new or old. A little scrub with a brush, a quick flush with water and the tires are BLACK. $11 bucks @ Walmart buys a gallon and you can take oil stains off your driveway too. As with most strong cleaners, keep if off the paint!
