I just purchased a 59 (ex-fuelie) with the wrong engine and a holley carb on a gm intake. Can not get a regular air cleaner to fit, does anyone have any suggestions to use for now so I can drive the car?

Bill, do a on-line search for low profile air cleaners. Several companies offer them. I saw one that dropped the base 1 1/4" below the flange of the carb. They are about 45 dollars. Probably the least expensive way to go especially if its only temporary- Top

Bill,
I faced the same exact issue with my '58 a while back. I ordered a Mr. Gasket air cleaner MRG-6477. It has a drop base which fits no problem, and looks similar to the original carbureted air cleaner.- Top

Believe you'll find that a 5 1/8" generic open-element drop down base air cleaner will fit. It did on mine. I just got a flyer in the mail from Jegs where they were on sale for $20 or $30.
Wad up a ball of tin foil; put it on top of your carb; and, close the hood. The tin foil will compress to the amount of space you have. Deduct the drop down from the height of the air cleaner.- Top
