    89 light problem.

My 89 passenger side turn signal light(yellow lens)and same side marker light(on right front side of car)do not work. I changed the bulbs for new ones at Carlisle...but lights still not working. Strangest thing is....A test light touched to each light socket shows power to each socket. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: 89 light problem.

Sometimes the spring below the phonelic circuit board with the power contact(s) that 'lives' in the bottom of the lamp socket is fatigued and fails to push up on the contact board hard enough to make a good connection to the power stud(s) on the lamp installed in the socket. Also, most dual filament lamps have locating pins on side and while they're not supposed to be able to be inserted in a socket 180-degrees out of phase, it CAN be done.

So, first check your lamp with an ohm meter to verify the filament(s) are intact (new doesn't guarantee they're good)...you should see a few ohms of resistance through each filament. Then, verify the lamps are actually inserted in the correct orientation for the socket.

If the problem is with the spring force on contact board in the socket, there are three fix approaches...

    (1) Replace the socket.

    (2) On some sockets you can push the wire through from the back side to access the spring and stretch it.

    (3) Finally, you can 'customize' the lamp by building up the contact electrode(s) by laying on 'blobs' of solder.

Beware of alternative three. If you're not good/quick with the soldering gun, you can actually open circuit the lamp's filament(s) with additional solder! So, if you go this route, re-verify the filament resistance/continuity AFTER you've done the solder job...
