    Pink Slips

I am looking at buying a 58 that has been in storage since 1960. The owner has a lot of paperwork but no title only registration. I seem to recall, I am not that old, that back then that is all you would get and then later on if it was registered then it would get a title whenever they started doing that. Would that be the only thing that this car would in 1960?

Some states will issue a title based only on a bill of sale. Call the DMV in your state capitol and see if it will issue a title with only a bill of sale in your state. The local DMV branches aren't familiar enough with that rule to be much help.

Yep. I bought a '61 a few years ago out of NY. I got a Missouri title with only a bill of sale. No problem.

New York still has no titles on vehicles 1974 and older. Ownership is transferred by signing the back of the registration card.

            Jeremy,

NYS began titling vehicles in the early 1970's. Before that, only a bill of sale was needed.
            Sounds like a great car.

This varies from state to state. Alabama started issuing titles in 1975. Vehicles older than that do not get a title, just a vehicle registration. A bill of sale is what is needed to get a registration for a 1974 and older vehicle in Alabama. The vehicle registration is your proof of ownership.

A registration from Alabama and a bill of sale (notarized) is usually all that is required to get a title in another state for an Alabama vehicle older than 1975.
