    Munsie 4speed

Back in my early years, corvette munsie 4speeds sold for a hundred dollars in the bone yards. Growing up with my 66 Big Block, I had a tendency to power shift third gear, resulting in blowing the cluster gear, and also the main input gear(fourth gear). One other problem, the shaft for the cluster gear would spin in the lower case, losing it's press fit, and allowing gear lube to leak. Years ago, I read an article, about someone taking the case, boring both holes, and installing new bushings to the original hole diameter. Being the pack-rat that I'm, I saved my original 4speed, all the internal parts, and the second 4speed, that I blew-up on my last day of college, when I received my diploma. I was courious if anyone knows of anyone doing this repair now. Thank Chuck Isaac

I'd check with Ed Hartnett of Lansdowne, PA or Larry Fischer of D&L Transmissions of Huntington Station, NY (631)351-4837. I think that either could fix you up just fine.

As far as the practicality of repairing the case goes, it depends what you're after. If original configuration is most important to you, then your best bet is to have the case repaired.

If your primary interest is functionality, then your best bet is a NEW Muncie case as manufactured by Auto Gear and available from either of the above. The new case is not exactly like the originals in configuration. However, it's WAY stronger and most of the original Muncie case shortcomings have been "engineered out". It's a real "work-of-art".

Also available from the above as manufactured by Auto Gear is a ductile iron rear bearing retainer plate which replaces the aluminum plate originally used for all Muncie transmissions. This design is similar to that used on Borg Warner Super T-10 transmissions which replaced the earlier aluminum plate of the T-10 with a ductile iron plate. This is WAY stronger. Paint the edges of the plate with cast blast aluminum paint and you could well get away with it on a stock Muncie for judging purposes.

chuck, most 4 speed rebuilders that are good can rebush the counter shaft---during my drag race days we would have the bushing hole moved .006 towards the main shaft to tighten things up a bit, good luck, phil

If it was the older case [65 down]with 7/8" pin have it bored for the 1" pin. you will have to upgrade to later components but should save the tranny. I have never done this myself but I do think would work. Mike
