I realize this isn't Corvette stuff but I need your help. I cannot get on line with Windows Internet Explorer. Therefore no emails, etc. Cut off from the world. Anyhow I am on here via Yahoo.
Tried a host of things. Wasted a lot of time. Any ideas??? Thanks, John D.

Mike: I tried it but did not like the way "Favorites" worked. Even tried the E-Mail system but kept losing some of Address Lists.

              Re: Internet Explorer

              John,

This doesn't make sense. If IE isn't working, how did you get to Yahoo? If you're on Yahoo, you're online.

How are you getting your email, through Outlook Express? Through a website?

I've helped many of my family members fix their computers, and 9 times out of 10 the computer just needs some serious cleaning up. Usually they have some sort of spyware on their system.

Everyone should be using some sort of firewall, and regularly clean your computer using antivirus software, anti-spyware software and a general system cleaner. Maybe your computer has all this stuff, but if not, here are some ideas.

For a free general cleaner you can go here www.ccleaner.com Try this first.

For a free firewall to protect you in the future, a good one is here www.personalfirewall.comodo.com

The best antivirus and spyware programs seem to be the ones you pay for. I use Mcafee antivirus which I got free with Comcast service, and Spysweeper which can be bought here www.webroot.com/

p.s. I use the Mozilla Firefox browser also. Mozilla has an email program also, but I seem to do OK with Outlook Express.

                    Re: Internet Explorer

Yep...Outlook Express is your likely culprit. Or, maybe not...Sometimes your ISP mail servers can be the problem, and they don't generally jump up and say "Our Bad!!! Our email service ***** these last few days, but we're working on it!!!".

I'm beginning to formulate a theory on these personal computers...It'll never be faster, more trouble free, and less annoying than it is on DAY ONE. After that, it's all down hill. The longer you keep it, the slower and more exasperating it becomes, until finally, you just throw it away in a fit of rage and buy a fresh one.

                      Re: Internet Explorer

John, Outlook Express has a max limit of e-mail storage. Value is unknown. Switched to Outlook and problem has never reocurred. Also, if you're on a full time broadband connection it's best to use a router between your PC and the broad connection. Router provides hardware isolation better known as a firewall. A router minimally should have NAT (network address translation) and SPI (stateful packet inspection) as features. A router along with good virus protection software will prevent hackers from directly accessing your computer. Hope this helps. Good luck, Gary....

Gary, I don't know if you read my ugly post on August 9th. But on that faithful day my PC got fried along with ALL the equipment. Anyhow I bought the works. New Linksys 4 port router (in lieu of the wireless I had before). New modem from Comcast (free), HP with all the toys, Geek Squad battery backup, and of course the virus protection software, etc. etc. Got a new printer also but didn't install it yet as I am using up all the ink carts 1st for the world's most thirsty printer that takes a lot of fits. Thanks for the good advice.
My friends holler at me a lot cause I still use AOL but I like it and it's too expensive now for me to switch if I wanted to. OutlookExpress looks interesting.
I am not that PC savy but am learning a lot the hard way now.
When my Belkin wirelss fried I learned that I could hook my PC directly to the modem. But when I told the Geeks that they echoed what you said. Thanks very much, John

                          Hi Bill,

Even better than that is SeaMonkey, also by Mozilla. Similar look as Firefox and Thunderbird, but it COMBINES both, so that your mail automatically opens when you activate the browser.

LIGHTNING FAST, the program is simpler than FF and Tbird............it is Mozilla's cutting edge setup. If you like FF and Tbird, try this..............you'll agree. Unlimited email storage, too.

                          Joe
