What is the proper procedure for installing the clutch return spring on my 1960. This is the heavy spring that goes from the frame to the bracket which is attahed to the cross shaft. Thanks in advance.

Re: 1960 Clutch Return Spring
There is an excellent article in the Restorer, Volume 14, Number 1 written by Joe Calcagno. It not only tells you how but also gives detailed information on how to make a installation tool that works well. I just replaced my clutch cross shaft in the 61 and the tool made life very safe and easy.- Top

Re: 1960 Clutch Return Spring
Assemble everything but only use the lower bolt for the bracket that attaches to the cross shaft. Then use a wrench or bar to rotate the bracket until the upper holes line up and install that bolt. Takes longer to explain than to do it. I've been doing it for 40 years and it only takes a couple mins. to install the whole set-up.- Top

Agree w/Jim... My preference is a large...
...(12") cresent wrench to rotate the cross shaft forward against the force of the "garage door" spring. Do you need this counterbalance spring??? Maybe not, but I just follow the General's instructions & install it anyway- Top
