    1967 Restoration

I am presently having my 1967 300HP Corvette restores, this time by a master that has many Bloomington Gold awards to his record. The question of the day is can I attain a Top Flite award for my 1967 Corvette with an incorrect color and standard radial tires?

I plan to drive the cas a little when finished (thus the better tires)and prefer not to own a white car.

    Thanks for your comments, Geoff

Nothing you can do about the paint for judging if you want a different color, but the remainder of the car had better be very correct. See if you can use a reproduction set of tires for the day of judging and put them on the car before you arrive. You'll want to generate all the points you can in this area. What color are you painting the car?

            I love white on a '67 ........

.......whether it has blue, saddle, black or red interior. It doesn't matter. Wayne, your convertible looks great. Jim Weeks - Member #2978

              Buy a different car.

Seriously, if you're going to spend $50,000 or (probably a lot) more on a restoration, why start with a car you don't like? It's not like you can't sell your 67 and find another.

Don't plan on getting your Gold, however. The color change prohibits it.

                Re: What's wrong with white?

Wayne, I love white. It's quite refreshing. Actually I like it now better than red.
I even like saddle cars now. Didn't always though. Had a nice saddle/saddle 63 coupe and everyone around here made fun of me. So I had it painted 63 red and then everyone drooled over it. No I love my white car but to some it's a plain Jane color. You can't beat ermine white though. Especially if its a real lacquer job. You need to score at least 94% to get Top Flight. Out of a total of 4500 points, that means you can lose a maximum of 270 points (excluding points earned by driving the car to the event).

Wrong body color is a full deduct of 85 points. Tires are 60 points total and you would get a full deduction for, say, Michelin radials. However, if the brand and size are "correct" for 1967 production, you will get partial credit even if the tires are radials. So, if you haven't yet purchased the tires, study the tire guidelines in the mandatory deductions section of the Judging Reference Manual.

While it is theoretically possible to get Top Flight with a full deduct on paint color and a full deduct on tires, that 145 point handicap will be very difficult to overcome unless the rest of the car is close to perfect.

                    Re: 1967 Restoration

I am currently working on my '57 restoration. I wrestled a lot with the color selection initially. With the C-1's there is no certain way to determine the body color it left the factory with. I recall seeing pictures from when the vehicle was first purchased by my father in 1963 and the car was white. He did not like white cars either. He made it into a black car with a red interior. During the tear down process it became evident the vehicle was originally white with a beige interior, a very unusual color combination for that year. Although it would have been one of my last color choices I felt the "right" thing to do was to make the car the way it was when it was new. Just my opinion, FWIW.

                      geoff

please do not change the color of your car you will regret it. i have reproduction bias ply tires on my mid years and they drive fine. they also do a better burnout.
