    Re: odometer not working

Usually the problem with inop on the odo is inside the speedo head. There are a couple of gears which run the odo and they wear out. Why do you think there are so many low mileage corvettes out there? Most corvette parts suppliers can fix you up with the parts, but be sure to check the odo and trip odo's to be sure they are not bound up. Good Vett'n! Casey

      Re: odometer not working

Few 'exercise' their tripometer function and lube in cable typically dries and/or 'clumps' into bottom bend in cable. Then, when function IS exercised, spring loaded reset button fails to return drive gear into position causing 'memory' functions (odometer/tripometer) not to engage/operate. If spring loaded reset button is left in 'in between' (engage/reset) position that's 'just right', it can cause gear teeth to mesh improperly resulting in colletorol damage.

I always council folks not to jump to the conclusion they need to replace parts. FIRST, loosen/remove tripometer drive cable and lubricate it with good quality speedo cable lube (typically graphite based), excercise it (in/out and round and round), then re-install. NOW, reset the tripometer to zero and MAKE SURE the spring loaded return operates (or force it by hand into return/engage position). Drive the car and see if suddenly your 'broken' speedo functions don't magically return! If they do, remember to exercise your tripometer reset feature periodically to prevent atrophy from disuse. Same goes for headlight switch and its interior/panel lamp dim function....

        Interesting

I've been aware of the mid-year dead speedo/odo problem since the late sixties/early seventies. It never happened to my SWC in it's first life of 115K miles. I ALWAYS reset the trip odo at every fuel fillup, and I always filled it up whenever I serviced the fuel. Thought that maybe my resetting the odo regularly might have had something to do with mine never breaking, but I never understood why. Now I do. Thanks, Jack.

          Re: odometer not working

All five of the mid years I have owned over the past 18 years have had broken odometers. There is the most Rube Goldberg arrangement of gears in this unit I have ever seen. The designer must have worked for Jaguar at some time. The usual cause is the grease used by GM. It is red-brown color and turns rock hard after a few years. There are gear sets available from Corvette suppliers but there are problems with the replacements The ID of the idler gear is larger that the shouldered bushing of the original. I have repaired three myself. Some lasted 20,000 miles, some 20 feet. My suggestion is to send it off, just like I did on Friday. Additionally, one of the gears is under the speedometer head. This must be removed to gain access and nullifies the calibration of the speedo.

Sounds a lot like my children. Not working, refuse to move, etc.! I wish I could order replacements!

            Varooom!

              WOW!

Rube Goldberg! There's a term I haven't seen used since the late '50s or early '60s....

For those who don't know, Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist who drew elaborate machines (mice on treadmills, driving winches, dropping balls on roller ramps, Etc.) that actually did perform a given feature/function but with the most comic level of redundant overdesign possible. My hat's off to this post! Thanks for the chuckle for the day....

Re: OK - I'll have to give my cluster up for rebld

After reading all the posts on gauges and gears I've decided to send it out for a rebuild. It's never been touched and looks pretty rough.

In fact my full cluster panel sits beside me right now on my desk - I pulled it out yesterday while changing my wires. I am really at odds over this decision. I'd rather do it over the winter when the downtime won't hurt so much.

PLEASE REPLY, those that know: ** Who has experience with rebuilding their instrument cluster?? ** I need to find someone who is a) good - I want it done just once b) value - I can't pay a fortune c) fast - maybe close to the Toronto area would help!

                THANKS!

Re: OK - I'll have to give my cluster up for rebld

I just sent my speedo/odo to Corvette Specialties of Maryland to have the odometer repaired and the speedo calibrated. If you can hold off a week or so I'll let you know how they do and what the tab was. CSM advertises in the Driveline. Two others I know of are the Clock Doc and D&M. They advertise in Vette Vues. Don't have their addresses but I think Clock Doc is in Tennessee. There are several things you can do yourself and save a few bucks. Log on the Zip-Corvette.com and look at the rebuild section in their technical page. Not really complete but some good tips.
