I have a 1991 - and the motor is a non-ZR-1 motor but my trans is a 6 speed ZR-1 trans? Any chance this was stock? I am the 3rd owner- car only has 23,000 MILES. Second owner told me that is how he bought the car? Could this trans been put in on production line?

Re: ZR-1 Trans
I thought the transmissions were the same for ZR1 and Corvette. Looking through the service manuals, I can't seem to locate a difference. Maybe someone smarter than me will chime in on this.Tom Hendricks

Re: ZR-1 Trans
the output shaft of the ZF6 installed in a ZR1 equipped vette will not fit a non-LT5 engine as the input shaft of the non-LT5 ZF6 is of different length than the LT5 ZF6. if i recall correctly, the LT5 ZF6 input shaft is longer than the input shaft of the ZF6 installed in the base motor c-4's. one could order a 91 Vette with a 6 spped ZF6 and many were built as such. mike- Top

Re: ZR-1 Trans
In 1991 5,875 6-speed manual transmissions were installed in the 1991 model year Corvettes. The RPO #MN6 was the same for ZR1's and non ZR1 Corvettes. There were 2,044 ZR1's and 3,831 other Corvettes with the 6-speed manual in 1991.- Top

Re: ZR-1 Trans
Jim, if GM's 1991 procedures were the same as todays, the MN6 marketing code does not mean the base and ZR1 trannies are the same; it simply means the appropriate six speed manual transmission will be installed in accordance with the production code on the build sheet.
For example, if you order MN6 and Z51 on a 2008, the production code for the six-speed manual transmission will show on the build sheet as MZ6, a lower-geared wide-ratio transmission; if you order MN6 on the base car, your build sheet will show MM6, which has slightly different gear ratios than the MZ6. I should also mention that the MZ6 transmission is NOT a free-standing option; it is only available with the Z51 package.
According to Mike, there are physical differences; but both are ZF transmissions...I think that's really what Joe wanted to confirm.- Top
