    Two 1957 Fuel Injection Documents

As long as I have my scanner running....two more public domain documents:

    1. The ABCs of Fuel Injection. An early Chevy attempt to explain the mysteries of fuel injection. I believe this is one of the more difficult to find early FI docs. 3.1mb download

    2. 1957 Fuel Injection System Service Parts. Several nice pictures and a bunch of part numbers. 1.9mb

Both of these can be found at the link provided below.

Yeah, I need to turn back to the 53 to 55 website. I have been like a 5 year old chasing butterflies this summer. But I am ready to get back to work on the 53 to 55 site again.

Re: Two 1957 Fuel Injection Documents

Aside from the two docs you mentioned, I found the equipment guide quite interesting. It shows both gross and net torque/power curves for all engines. I'm not sure if net power was defined exactly the same back then as it is today, but the graphs clearly show the effect of front end accessories, the vehicle exhaust system, and what is likely lower air density than standard sea level air density (but maybe not exactly the same as current SAE net air density). They take a big hit.

It mentions that the lower cranking compression pressure of the 270 and 290 HP engines is due to valve overlap. This is incorrect. It is due to the later closing inlet valve on the Duntov cam relative to the base cam. Increased overlap is why the Duntov cam engines have to idle at a higher speed, but still generate less manifold vacuum than the base cam. The 290FI engine should actually have a higher cranking compression pressure than the 270 due to the FI engine's 10.5:1 CR versus the 270's 9.5.

The article also mentions using nitrogen in the tires, so I guess than myth has been around for a lot longer than I thought.

...not trying to open a can of worms here, but if you missed the thread on nitrogen late last year seach the recent archives using the word "Waals". The long accepted science as to why nitrogen and air behave the same way as long as the tire temperature does not drop below the dew points was discussed in great detail.

Russ, When I went to the GM training center in 1961-62 they used the ABC's on slides with added voice.
Then in the early 90's Frank Scabica and Ken Kayser did a seminar at the Rochester Products engineering center and showed the same film. I tried for years to get a copy of the commentator but couldn't. Can't think of the right word. Audio visual maybe. Wish we could get copies of that film. Thanks, John

Re: Two 1957 Fuel Injection Documents

Thanks for your note John. The cover of the ABC FI document shows a slide projector, so I figured the ABC FI document was part of an Audio-Visual presentation.

The Jam Handy organization prepared most of Chevrolet's A/V presentation. The presentations often featured a film strip (slides) and a record. You would play the film strip and record on something like an Explainette player (pictured below).

The old Jam Handy presentations can be digitized with the right hardware/software. I have converted a few of the old A/V's relating to 1954 Corvettes. See the link below.

Thus, if we can find the filmstrip and record relating to the ABC FI materials, I can convert the material into a digital movie and post it on the internet.

The Jam Handy materials pop up on ebay every now and then. I watch for them to see if anything C1 or C2 is for sale. I have not seen the ABC FI filmstrip and record for sale yet.
