    1964 Hi-Beam dash blub?

    Hi all,

After having removed my instrument cluster for restoration and now I am putting it back I am replacing all the bulbs for sake of new verses old and realized the one used for the high beam was blackened and unreadable. Looking at the AIM I am having a hard time making any sense as to what bulb number is used where. Can someone possibly tell me a current bulb number which should be used for the high beam dash light?

    Thanks as usual,

    Craig Willetts

    Craig,
I am unable to correctly answer your query regarding the hi-beam indicator bulb but can offer my two cents worth on a couple of other bulbs in the '64 instrument panel. I recently made several attempts locally to buy the flashing bulb for the parking brake warning light and for the "headlights on but not rollled up" warning. Although several sources had the correct number bulb, the actual bulb was not a flasher bulb. Hopefully you already have the correct flasher bulbs. I finally sourced them at a local "if its a light bulb, we have it" store.
    Best regards,
    Charlie

All the bulbs are listed in your OWNERS manual

The 1964 Shop Manual lists all bulb numbers and candle power in Section 12, Electrical-Body and Chassis

Craig,63 used a #53 headlamp beam indicator lamp not to be confused with the 257 which is the bulb for the headlamp motor warming lamp-flashing.

I have a question which I forgot to research on my 63. I think that both the parking brake alarm and the headlamp motor warming lamp bulbs should flash. We put the 257's in for both applications but only one of the two is flashing. Forgot about that. Make sure both of yours are flashing although you didn't ask this.

The old bulbs are quite unique compared to what is available today.
Courtesy lite bulbs. Try finding the very small #90's. Look like a small grape instead of the monsters you find today. Believe it or not some judges look for this. Now when you find the small #90's with the little glass globe and they won't go in the socket you wanna kill yourself. Here's the scoop that I discovered. The old GE #90's-little globes have a big glob of solder on the ends-dual contacts. So if you find those just take a file and sand the solder off a tad. That's the extent of my interior bulb knowledge. Learned it after I got a deduct for having courtesy bulbs shaped like a pear as Bill S told me. Didn't know what he was talking about as they lite up rear nice. Jorjorian and Sangrey taught me about the courtesy lite bulbs. Note: The 63 shop manual lists all the bulbs and candle power in a lot of detail. More than the owners manual. Pg 14-7. They don't give brand names for the bulbs though-just numbers. Guys think that Westinghouse and GE bulbs are the same deal but they are not. Some fit and some don't as mentioned above.
Fuses: Don't pay attention to some of the repro catalogs on the fuses for your car. I blew the 10 buks on those. Your fuses are NOT color coded. Just regular plain glass fuses. John
