62 Clutch/Transmission Noise

200 miles after a new clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bushing and rebuilt transmission. I am now experiencing a grinding noise when the clutch is depressed. The noise starts as you pass free play and continues unchanged throught the clutch travel. Pulled the transmission and found throwout bearing installed correctly and apparently undamaged. No evidence of wear on the clutch fork. Pilot bushing appears OK. Input shaft of the transmission has over .060" of side play at the pilot end. How much is normal? Any other thoughts as to cause of noise?

Usually a bad throwout bearing or improper installation of the throwout in the clutch fork, regarding the spring clips on the fork.

Just because the throw out bearing "looks" ok doesn't mean that it's not going south on you.

For the cost, I'd invest in another bearing. I'll bet the noise go's away.

John, I remember owning a new 65 Corvette that ate two throwout bearings. Then the mechanic told me that I should go out and buy a good one from over the counter and he would install it on shop time for free. After that I never had any more problems. Can still remember the grinding noise. Course the full throttle shifting probably didn't help. JD
