Key escutheon plate or bezel.

In Ray Millers book "The Real Corvette" he mentions that in 1957 GM eliminated the key position bezel which had been added to Corvettes in 1956.
Is this correct? All 57s I have seen have the bezel although it appears to have a metal ring around it as opposed to plain black plastic for later years. Thanks in advance for your input.

Black with ring as you describe is correct for early '57 to approx VIN 1900. After VIN 1900 there was no chrome backing rim. Gary....
